Wine tour in the past
The vineyards of the Noszvaj-Szomolya municipality spread over 200 hectares on the slopes of the Kánya stream. Grapes have been grown on these hills for hundreds of years! And where grapes grow, wine is made, cellars are built...
In the old days, vine-growers' dwellings and cellars were built in the easy-to-carve Rhyolite tuff hillsides. The locals call these ‘structures’ cellar or cave dwellings, which were built using natural materials and only a pick and a hammer. (The Rhyolite tuff soil is also the reason why the grapes are harvested here with the highest average must sugar levels in several years.)
A walk through the cellars
The Noszvaz cellar lane is neither long nor continuous, but it has a wonderful atmosphere!
The cellars are located in different parts of the village. You should walk along Jókai út and towards the western and southern side of the Nagyimány hill if you wish to admire traditional and new cellars. And if you're interested in the cellars of the old big farmers, head to the beginning of Szomolyai út.
This is where you will find the cellars and granary, which are over 200 years old and were once part of the Almássy manor house. It was renovated by the Thummerer family to house their winery and visitor centre, where you can taste and buy their wines.
Underground wine tour
On the Thummerer cellar tour you can walk through all the branches of the 4,200 m2 cellar system carved into the tuff, see the traditional wooden barrel ageing section, the bottle ageing section and the stainless steel tanks. Guided tastings at Thummerer Cellar are open to groups of 8 or more. Advance booking required!
Wine tour of the vineyards
Until the late 19th century, mainly white varieties were grown here, but they died out in the phylloxera epidemic of the time. The spread of new resistant varieties brought the red wine culture to the area. Whether white or red, there are certainly few more beautiful sights than the sun setting over the rows of vines.
Get romantic, set up a picnic on the slopes!
